The prenatal yoga study results are in! Conducted at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville by then Master’s student, Doree Gardner (far right),
this study compared the intensity and perceived feasibility and enjoyment of two popular prenatal yoga DVD’s: Shiva Rea’s Prenatal Yoga and Jennifer Wolfe’s Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga. Results showed that while participants who were all in their second trimesters, rated both DVD’s equally feasible and enjoyable, the vinyasa flow DVD expended significantly more calories than Shiva Rea’s prenatal yoga DVD. Both DVD’s were classified as light intensity physical activity based on participants’ metabolic responses. Interestingly, although the participants reportedly enjoyed both DVD’s equally, they practiced the Vinyasa DVD over twice as much when given both DVD’s to practice at home for two weeks. This study is in the final stages of data analysis and we anticipate publication early next year.
